When
they were in the House of Lords it was the same: their Lordships unlike other
judges did not wear gowns.
They
do have some ceremonial gowns, which cost £140,000 according to the Daily Mail
(not the most reliable of sources)
but
they don't wear them in court.
I
suspect that their not wearing gowns unlike other judges is just a hangover from
House of Lords days. Members of the House of Lords don't wear gowns, and the
judicial committee was no different in this regard. So, this is not a radical
break with tradition, but just carrying on as we did before. At great cost.

Colleagues
I just returned from a visit to the
“other” London ( I am from London Ontario). I made a pilgrimage to the Superior
Court and the SCUK (whoever came up with that acronym – is it really the Supreme
Court of the UK?) and took the obligatory photos
of Old Bailey Road. I was surprised
to see that my colleagues gown ( as I do) and wear a wig ( happily I do not) but
the judges were not gowned; they wore office suits. Is this new? Why are
barristers hanging on to the tradition but the judiciary are not? I hope we do
not get rid of the gown here, and certainly hope that judges continue to wear
them. If anyone understands the rationale, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Many
thanks.
